Raking leaves is a great outdoor activity and form of exercise. To avoid experiencing discomfort after a long day of raking, keep these tips in mind:
Warm up your muscles before you start, with a quick 5 minute walk and wear shoes that have strong traction, as wet leaves can be slippery.
Stretch your arms, shoulders, legs and do a few squats after your warm up.
Proper technique involves keeping one hand at the top of the rake, and switching hands frequently. Have your legs slightly bent and keep your weight evenly distributed.
Change it up - Switch sides often. Take frequent breaks if needed.
Short sweeps of the rake will be less tiring than big ones. Relax and don't overextend when you stretch.
Lift the heavy, leaf filled bags with your knees, and keep your back straight to avoid strain. Avoid twisting your waist, move with your feet instead. Stop working if you feel pain in your back.
