Parents are accustomed to the importance of oral health for their kids, but what about spinal hygiene? Kids run, jump, bump, trip, fall, carry backpacks, slouch and spend way too much time on phones, tablets, and computers. All these are stressors that can throw the spine out of it's normal alignment. The problem is, however, that kids rarely complain or show any of the adult-like symptoms like pain, headaches and stiffness.
The spine plays an important role in posture, supporting the body's weight, in locomotion and in protection of the spinal cord and nerve roots. When the spine is exposed to trauma or repetitive stress, spinal bones can shift out of normal alignment or stop moving properly. Mis-alignments of the spine can interfere with the proper functioning of the nervous system and left uncorrected can set the stage for problems seen later in adults.
When is it appropriate to check in with a chiropractor?
Many parents have their newborns checked after childbirth and at the milestones:
- upon holding head up
- when able to sit alone
- when starting to crawl
- when able to stand alone
- when starting to walk
Imagine how many falls on the buttocks and other bumps occur just from learning to stand upright and walk. Add to that "child's play" of tots and preschoolers.
For older children and adolescents, it is important to monitor for the effects of backpack and device usage, poor posture, study and sleep habits, as well as competitive sport and recreational activities. The spine should also be assessed as soon as possible after any significant falls/trauma. Chiropractic check-ups identify and correct mis-alignments, ensuring your child's nervous system is functioning at it's very best as they develop and grow!
