Safe Snow Shoveling

Winter weather can be extreme at times and, and with heavy snowfalls, injuries are common.  Improper snow shoveling is often to blame.  However, with a little know how, you can clear your driveway without the all the common back, neck and shoulder pain.  Here's how:

Before You Start:

  • Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes with a brisk or light stretching.
  • Proper footwear - a good, solid tread can help to minimize the risk of slips and falls.
  • Pick a lightweight, push style shovel.
  • A curved handle is more ergonomically efficient and will help prevent injury and fatigue.
  • Throw down some salt or sand to ensure you have a good footing.

All Set To Go:

  • Push the snow to one side.
  • If the snow is light and fluffy, try using a broom.
  • When snow is heavy use a smaller shovel - lifting less snow, puts less strain on your body.
  • Avoid throwing it.  If you must, do so without twisting and turning.
  • Bend your knees, and use your leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting.
  • Keep yourself hydrated - drink water!

And be sure to ask for help if there is a lot of snow!
