Safe Snow Shoveling

Winter weather can be extreme at times and, with the season's heavy snowfalls, injuries are common.  Improper snow shoveling is often to blame.  However, with a little know how, you can clear your driveway without the all the common back, neck and shoulder pain.  Here's how:

Before You Start:

  • Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes with a brisk or light stretching.
  • Keep yourself hydrated - drink water!
  • Dress in layers so you can remove them as you get warm.
  • Proper footwear - a good, solid tread can help to minimize the risk of slips and falls.
  • Pick a lightweight, push style shovel.
  • A smaller blade will mean you lift less snow, putting less strain on your body.
  • A curved handle is more ergonomically efficient and will help prevent injury and fatigue.

All Set To Go:

  • Push the snow to one side
  • Avoid throwing it.  If you must, do so without twisting and turning.
  • Bend your knees, and use your leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting.
  • Be careful on icy walkways and slippery surfaces.

Throw down some salt or sand to ensure you have a good footing. Once you've mastered safe snow shoveling techniques, you'll be free to have fun and stay fit all winter.
