Backpack Buying Tips

Having a well fitted backpack can help prevent injuries in the back, neck and shoulders of your youngsters.  As you are buying backpacks for your kids, consider the following tips:

  • Buy a size appropriate backpack for your child - the pack should sit between the hips and shoulders
  • Light weight material is ideal
  • Be sure straps are wide, padded and adjustable
  • The surface against the spine needs to be padded
  • Look for a backpack with plenty of pockets to distribute weight
  • Make sure the straps aren't too snug around the shoulders and armpits
  • You should be able to slide your hand between the backpack and your child's spine

An interesting point to keep in mind - the total weight of the backpack should be at most 15 percent of a person's body weight and 10 percent for elementary students.

If you are unsure as to whether your child's backpack is properly fitted or have any questions, please call or drop in to Uptown Chiropractic for a complimentary backpack check up.
