Would you believe that more than 50% of young people will experience low back pain before they reach their teens? Studies show that a backpack weighing more than 10 to 15 % of a child’s bodyweight increases this risk. Prolonged wearing of a heavy or unevenly distributed pack can also lead to poor posture and misalignment of the spine. Symptoms of “Pack Pain” may include headaches, neck, back and arm pain and sometimes numbness. Consider these buying and wearing tips to help your students create good backpack habits.
How to Pick, Pack & Wear your Backpack:
Pick a pack with:
- Light-weight material
- Wide, padded and adjustable straps
- Padding on the back surface
- Plenty of pockets, especially a large one at the back for books or computer
The Fit:
- Buy a size appropriate backpack for your child
- The pack should sit between the hips and shoulders
- Make sure the straps aren't too snug around the shoulders and armpits
Everyday Use:
- Place the heaviest objects like books/computer against the back
- Use both shoulder straps
- Leave oddly shaped objects on the outside of the pack
- Only pack necessities for the day
A well packed backpack should weigh a maximum of 15% of your older child's bodyweight and only 10% for elementary school children!
