Snow shovelling may seem like a routine winter task but it places significant stress on your back, neck and shoulders. Using proper body mechanics can help protect your spine and keep you safe all season long.
- Use your legs: Bend at the knees and engage your leg muscles, rather than placing strain on your back.Wear shoes or boots with good traction to help reduce the risk of slips and falls.
- Choose the right shovel: For larger areas, consider a push-style shovel to move snow without lifting. When lifting is necessary, use a lightweight shovel with a smaller blade to help avoid overloading. Use a curved handle shovel to reduce strain and fatigue.
- Push, don't lift: If you must lift, face the direction you are moving. Avoid twisting when throwing snow.
- Take breaks: Pace yourself by shovelling in shorter sessions throughout the day, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
If you feel pain, tightness or discomfort while shovelling, stop immediately.
