Walk like a Penguin

It may sound funny, but it works! Walking like a penguin - slowly with short steps - can help prevent slips and falls on icy sidewalks. This technique keeps your centre of gravity over your feet, improving balance and reduces your risk of falling, when surfaces are slippery.

Taking a few simple precautions can help you stay upright and safe during the winter months:

    • Wear proper winter footwear with thick, non-slip soles to improve traction on snow and ice.
    • Land with a flatter foot and point your feet slightly outward as you walk.
    • Keep your hands out of your pockets and extend your arms slightly to help maintain balance. 
    • Avoid using your phone while walking so you can react quickly to slippery conditions.
    • Test potentially slippery areas by lightly tapping your foot before putting your full weight down.
    • Use handrails when walking up or down stairs.
    • Stay active with regular exercise to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance coordination, balance and stability!
