Safe Raking

Raking leaves is a great outdoor activity anyone can enjoy.  But many have probably experienced pain or discomfort after a long day of raking leaves and bending over to pack them into bags. When you do start raking those leaves, keep these tips in mind.

  • Before you start, warm up your muscles with a 10 minute walk.
  • Follow your warm up with a few easy, low-impact stretches.
  • Wear shoes that have strong traction, as wet leaves can be slippery.
  • When lifting bags of leaves, make sure you are lifting correctly. Avoid twisting your back, move with your feet instead. Keep your back straight and use your knees when lifting. Stop working if you feel pain in your back.
  • Keep one hand at the top of the rake, and switch hands frequently.
  • Have your legs slightly bent and keep your weight evenly distributed.
  • Drink lots of water to keep your body well hydrated! Take frequent breaks if needed.
  • Relax and do not overextend when you stretch. Keep the rake close to your body.

If you experience back pain that persists for more than a day or two after yard work, consider consulting with a chiropractor!
